Creating a PDF Document

JYT Print and Publishing Specialists

Setting up Adobe PostScript printer drivers

You will need to install the following applications and printer drivers.

  • Adobe Acrobat 4-6 with Acrobat Distiller
  • Adobe PS Printer Driver

Using an authoring application’s Print command (Mac OS)

Use the AdobePS 8.7 driver to create PDF files directly from within Mac OS authoring applications using Create Adobe PDF. Create Adobe PDF enables you to easily create a PDF file from any application using the AdobePS PostScript printer driver. It makes creating PDF files as easy as printing to a printer. Create Adobe PDF enables you to create a PDF file without either creating a PostScript file or launching Distiller.

To create Adobe PDF files using Create Adobe PDF:

In your authoring application, open the file you want to convert to an Adobe PDF file.

  1. Choose File > Page Setup.
  2. From the Printer pop-up menu, select Create Adobe PDF. Close the Page Setup dialog box.
  3. Choose File > Print. In the Printer pop-up menu, verify that the printer is Create Adobe PDF and the destination is File.
  4. In the Job Options pop-up menu, choose JYT_Press.
  5. Click Save to create the PDF file.
  6. Type a filename, browse to a destination for your PDF file, and then click Save.

*If you have any PostScript printer defined in the Chooser, choose File > Page Setup after you install Acrobat, and a Create Adobe PDF printer is defined automatically.

Using an authoring application’s Print command (Windows)

In a Windows authoring application, use the File > Print command with the Acrobat Distiller printer to “print” the current document as Adobe PDF.

To create an Adobe PDF file using the Print command:

In your authoring application, open the file you want to convert to an Adobe PDF file.

  1. Open the document that you want to convert to Adobe PDF in its authoring application.
  2. Choose File > Print.
  3. Choose Acrobat Distiller from the list of printers. The printer properties must then be called up from the Print dialog box. Here is where you would select the JYT_Press job options from the "Adobe PDF Settings" panel. Enter any other print options you want, and click Print or OK. In some applications, you may need to click Setup in the Print dialog box to access the list of printers.

By default, Distiller appends the extension .pdf. You can configure Distiller to ask you for a location when it creates PDF files.

One example of a PDF workflow

A detailed example is presented here to explain one way to prepare a PDF document using the Create Adobe PDF Printer and the JYT Press Distiller job options.
